Vision and Philosophy

City Heights is a place for children to learn and grow in a well-resourced, comfortable prepared environment with caring and dedicated teachers. The programme incorporates Maria Montessori’s philosophy and curriculum of didactic materials which include practical life, sensorial, language, mathematical and cultural activities. The programme also encompasses the play-based New Zealand Early Childhood curriculum Te Whāriki. Offering both structure in the Montessori programme and open-ended play opportunities with the socio-cultural emphasis of Te Whāriki, children are well supported to develop working theories about the world, learning dispositions, independence, confidence, competence in literacy, numeracy, science and the arts and social skills. The programme incorporates Maori language and tikanga to reflect the bicultural heritage of Aotearoa/ New Zealand. Other cultures are celebrated in response to the cultural makeup of the families in the Centre at any given time. We aim to see children leave City Heights with the skills and competencies necessary to ensure smooth transitions to school, future successes in education and an ongoing love of learning.

We believe in positive respectful partnerships between children, whānau, families, caregivers and teachers where we value our community’s diversity. We aim to support children’s learning through a stimulating prepared environment that nurtures and develops dispositions for learning and provides opportunities for success, challenges, individual interests, and freedom of choice. Our community fosters contextual, collaborative and reciprocal learning, where teachers are facilitators, carers and friends of the children. We empower children to become responsible members of society, and most importantly to have fun in the process.
